AI VISIBILITY OPTIMISATION

How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

You cannot buy a guaranteed AI recommendation. You can make your business easier to discover, understand and assess. Here is a practical method for UK local businesses.

Chit Chat Studio · 7 October 2026

Make your business discoverable, publish clear answers to the questions buyers actually ask, support your claims with evidence and maintain accurate information across your website and relevant public profiles. For Google AI Overviews, normal search eligibility and SEO fundamentals still apply. For ChatGPT search, do not block its search crawler from the pages you want it to use. None of this guarantees a recommendation.

That is the practical answer to “how to rank in ChatGPT.” There is no universal, stable ChatGPT ranking table that works like a single list of search positions. Responses depend on the prompt, search use, context, location and the sources available at that moment.

For local businesses, the goal is more useful than a screenshot with your name in it: be found for relevant questions, described accurately and contacted by people you can genuinely help.

This guide explains AI search optimisation for local business using official guidance reviewed on 7 October 2026. It also describes the work behind our AI Visibility Optimisation service.

First, separate the outcomes

“Showing up in AI” can mean several different things.

OutcomeWhat it meansWhy it matters
Brand mentionThe answer names your businessAwareness, but not necessarily a recommendation
Source citationYour page is used or linked as a sourceYour content contributed to the answer
RecommendationThe answer suggests your business for a particular needPotential buyer consideration
Referral and conversionSomeone visits or contacts you, then becomes a useful leadCommercial impact

A citation in an explanation about boiler servicing is not the same as a recommendation to hire your heating business. Neither is automatically a sale.

Measure them separately. Otherwise, an agency can make a report look impressive without improving your pipeline.

Google AI Overviews are not a replacement for SEO

Google’s official guidance says the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for these AI features.

That means:

  • Do not block the relevant public pages from crawling.
  • Make important information available as text.
  • Use clear internal links.
  • Keep your business information accurate.
  • Make the page usable on mobile.
  • Ensure any structured data matches visible content.
  • Maintain your Google Business Profile where applicable.

There is no special “AI Overview schema” that guarantees inclusion. A new acronym does not make indexing, useful content and trustworthy evidence irrelevant.

AI Visibility Optimisation adds a focus on the questions people ask AI, the accuracy of brand descriptions and the evidence sources those systems can access. It should complement sound SEO—not persuade you to stop doing it.

ChatGPT search access is different from model training

OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, used for crawling content that may be used in model training.

A publisher can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. Those are independent controls.

Do not assume you must let your site be used for model training to be eligible for ChatGPT search.

Your technical review should check more than robots.txt. A firewall, bot challenge or content-delivery network can block useful access even when the robots file allows it.

OpenAI also has ChatGPT-User, used for certain user-triggered visits. Allowing that user agent is not the same thing as configuring search discovery.

This advice concerns search-enabled discovery. It does not let you directly rewrite a model’s existing internal knowledge of your business.

A practical method for local businesses

Step 1: choose the questions that precede an enquiry

Start with the customer, not a long list of keywords.

For an illustrative Birmingham plumbing company, useful questions might include:

  • “How much does an emergency plumber cost in Birmingham?”
  • “Who can repair a leaking boiler in my area?”
  • “Does a boiler replacement quote include disposal?”
  • “Should I repair or replace a ten-year-old boiler?”
  • “Which plumbing companies handle landlords’ maintenance?”

The business must only publish claims about areas and work it actually covers. Do not create hundreds of town pages that pretend you have a local office everywhere.

Group prompts by intent: price, suitability, comparison, process, service area and urgency.

Then identify the questions you can answer with genuine expertise and evidence.

Step 2: establish a baseline before changing anything

Create a small, fixed set of meaningful prompts.

Record the engine or product, exact wording, date, relevant location, whether search was used and what happened:

  • Was your business named?
  • Was it described correctly?
  • Was your website cited?
  • Which other sources appeared?
  • Did the answer recommend someone unsuitable?

Repeat under comparable conditions. One answer is a sample, not a reliable measurement.

Avoid prompts that contain your business name unless you are deliberately testing brand accuracy. “Why is Example Plumbing the best?” is not a fair discovery test.

Step 3: make it obvious what your business does

Your website should clearly state:

  • Business and trading names.
  • Actual services.
  • Service area and any coverage limits.
  • Contact options and opening hours.
  • Relevant qualifications or registrations, where verifiable.
  • Who the service is and is not suitable for.
  • Pricing structure, or the factors needed for a quote.

For local businesses, keep your name, address where appropriate, phone number and hours consistent across the website and relevant profiles.

If you operate as a service-area business, describe that honestly. Do not publish a false address to look more local.

A vague homepage that says “innovative solutions tailored to your needs” gives buyers—and search systems—very little to work with.

Step 4: publish answer-first pages

An answer-first page gives a useful short answer near the top, then explains the conditions and evidence.

For example, a pricing page should say what changes the price: labour, materials, urgency, access, geography and tax. If there is no standard price, explain why and show what a quote includes.

A practical structure is:

  1. A direct answer.
  2. A small table when it makes comparison easier.
  3. The assumptions or exclusions.
  4. A worked example.
  5. Situations where the service is not right.
  6. A useful next step.

This is not a guaranteed citation formula. It makes the content easier to understand and assess.

Compare our AI receptionist cost guide and WhatsApp Business API pricing guide: the point is to answer the purchasing question, not hide the answer behind a discovery call.

Step 5: add evidence that another source could verify

Claims need support.

“Best customer service” is hard to assess. A documented process, named expertise, a relevant case study and accurate independent reviews provide more useful information.

For an SME, evidence might include:

  • A case study explaining the starting situation, work and result.
  • A professional registration with a verifiable record.
  • Original photos of actual work, used with permission.
  • An explanation written or checked by someone with relevant experience.
  • A clearly dated price or service policy.
  • Honest customer reviews collected without manipulation.

Do not invent testimonials, inflate a client’s results or turn an illustrative calculation into a real case study.

You do not need to make every page sound academic. You do need to distinguish what happened, what you estimate and what you recommend.

Step 6: improve relevant third-party information

Your website is not the only possible source.

Maintain accurate listings on relevant trade directories, professional bodies, local organisations and business profiles. Correct outdated phone numbers, service descriptions and names.

Earn useful mentions through actual work: local partnerships, expert commentary, community activity or a case study with a consenting customer.

That does not mean buying hundreds of irrelevant directory entries. A business being repeated across poor-quality pages is not evidence that it deserves a recommendation.

Do not purchase fake reviews or undisclosed endorsements.

Step 7: keep technical signals accurate

Appropriate structured data can describe content and business entities, but it must reflect what users can see.

Use relevant types, such as Article for editorial content or an appropriate LocalBusiness type for real business information. Do not mark yourself as a business category you do not belong to.

Do not add fabricated aggregate ratings or claim review stars you are not eligible for. A visible FAQ can help readers without guaranteeing a Google FAQ rich result.

Other useful checks include canonical URLs, working links, sitemaps, page titles, descriptions and indexability.

An llms.txt file may be useful in some contexts, but it is not a substitute for crawlable pages, indexing or reliable content, nor a guaranteed path to a recommendation.

Step 8: connect discovery to a useful conversation

Being mentioned is only the first step.

If someone lands on your site after asking AI about a service, the page should make the next action clear: request a quote, ask about suitability, book a consultation or contact a person.

A website chat widget can answer a relevant follow-up and collect a qualified enquiry. It should not block the article, pretend to be human or pressure every reader for a phone number.

For example, a visitor reading about boiler replacement might want to explain the property type and existing system before requesting a survey.

With a configured ChitChatBot flow, those details can be captured, stored and routed to your team. A helpful next step is more valuable than a generic “How can we help?” that leads nowhere.

A 30-day implementation plan

Thirty days is a period for completing useful work, not a promise of AI visibility gains within a month.

PeriodWork to completeEvidence of progress
Week 1Audit access, business facts and buyer promptsDocumented baseline and prioritised issues
Week 2Fix core pages and inconsistent profilesClear services, locations and contact details
Week 3Publish a small set of well-supported answersPricing, process or comparison pages with evidence
Week 4Check discovery samples and lead handlingRepeatable report and working conversion path

Continue reviewing as your business, offers and the search products change. Crawl access and publication are not the same as immediate indexing or recommendation.

What should you measure?

Use a scorecard that separates signals from results.

Discovery and accuracy

Track mentions, citations and whether descriptions are correct across the fixed prompt set. Record the sample size and conditions.

If you report “mention share,” define it. For example: your business appeared in 8 of 40 comparable sampled answers. That does not mean 20% of all AI searches recommend you.

Referrals

Look for identifiable referral traffic. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help analytics attribution.

Do not assume every AI-influenced buyer will click a tracked link. Some will search your name separately or call.

Google’s documentation describes AI-feature traffic within Search Console’s overall Web reporting. Do not label every organic click as an AI Overview click.

Leads and commercial outcomes

Track qualified conversations, bookings, quote requests and eventually revenue where your data permits.

Ask “How did you hear about us?” where appropriate. Treat the answers as useful but imperfect attribution.

The most valuable question is not “Did an AI say our name?” It is “Did more suitable people discover us and take a meaningful next step?”

What not to pay for

Be cautious about offers that promise:

  • Guaranteed first place in ChatGPT.
  • Guaranteed inclusion in Google AI Overviews.
  • A special schema file that bypasses normal search quality.
  • Thousands of generic AI-written pages with no original value.
  • A report based only on prompts designed to flatter your brand.
  • Fake independent comparisons or manufactured reviews.

No agency controls another company’s generated answer.

That includes us.

How ChitChatBot’s AI Visibility Optimisation helps

Our AI Visibility Optimisation service focuses on the work a business can actually control: clear information, answer-led content, technical access, credible evidence and measured discovery.

We can connect that work to the conversation after discovery—website chat, WhatsApp, qualification, CRM routing and human handoff—through an agreed done-for-you engagement.

For SMEs serious about growth, that is the useful combination: being easier to find and being ready to handle the enquiry well.

It is not a replacement for a good service, accurate information or a sales team that follows up.

How this article applies the method

It gives the short answer first, defines the different outcomes, uses a practical action table, names its review date and links to primary guidance.

It also states the limits: no guaranteed inclusion, no invented ranking benchmark and no claim that structured data alone makes you visible.

That makes the page useful whether or not an AI engine ever cites it. Search optimisation should not make content worse for the person who actually needs the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a local business rank in ChatGPT?

A local business can be discovered, cited or recommended in search-enabled answers. There is no single guaranteed ranking position. Accurate public information, useful content and accessible sources are practical starting points.

Do I need to allow GPTBot?

OpenAI distinguishes GPTBot training access from OAI-SearchBot search access. You can allow its search crawler while disallowing its training crawler.

Does schema guarantee a Google AI Overview citation?

No. Google says no special technical requirements apply beyond ordinary search eligibility. Appropriate, accurate structured data supports understanding but does not guarantee a citation.

How long does AI search optimisation take?

It varies with your baseline, the changes required, crawling and the questions being tested. Work can be completed on a schedule; third-party indexing and recommendations cannot be promised on one.

Is this only for large brands?

No. Local businesses can provide highly useful answers about specific services and areas. Focus on the needs you actually serve rather than trying to be recommended for everything.
