The brief.

Art Ilk is an online retailer selling over 1,000 unique art prints. Their catalogue is their strength and their challenge: with so much choice, customers frequently browse without converting, unable to locate the style or size they're looking for without significant effort.

The brief was direct: reduce browse-without-buying behaviour by helping customers navigate the catalogue conversationally. The assistant needed to feel like a gallery expert, not a search bar โ€” asking the right questions to surface the right prints, then making a confident recommendation.

02 ยท THE STRATEGY

The strategy.

We built an on-site chat widget that connects directly to Art Ilk's Shopify store in real time. Rather than a static product recommender, the assistant queries live inventory, pricing, and availability as part of the conversation โ€” so the recommendations it makes are always in stock and correctly priced.

The assistant guides customers through a short preference conversation (room, style, colour palette, size, budget) and surfaces three to five tailored options with direct add-to-cart links. For undecided customers, it offers comparison framing and upsell context โ€” explaining why a canvas print in a larger size works better in a particular room, for example.

Live Shopify integration

Every recommendation is pulled from live inventory. The assistant never suggests an out-of-stock item or an outdated price โ€” credibility that static recommendation widgets can't match.

Preference discovery, not filtering

Instead of asking customers to operate filters, the bot asks what they're trying to achieve: the room, the feeling, the existing colours. Answers map to Shopify tags, surfacing prints the customer wouldn't have found by browsing.

Upsell and comparison framing

When a customer shortlists two options, the assistant offers informed comparison โ€” dimensions in context, framing options, delivery timelines. Higher-confidence decisions led directly to the AOV improvement.
